Four reasons to take up sewing

Cover

Do you recall your days back in high school where you sat miserably in your living skills class(kemahiran hidup) learning how to work  the sewing machine? Thinking  how any of this  would benefit  your future.  Well, let’s see , if you did take back a thing or two then “Bravo”. Here we have four valid reasons why you should know how to sew.

No1 : Rising cost

Given the  rise in our standard cost of living , every cent saved  could be put to a much  greater cause instead . Lost a buckle ?  Is a skirt torn??  Get it fixed yourself.

With some basic sewing skills, all this petty thing can  be rectified in an instant. One would just require a home sewing kit which includes some thread and needles .

The need to have a basic sewing kit at  home is  as important as a first aid kit. Thus, every home should be equipped with one .

No2: A hobby perhaps?

Let your inner  Fashionista  Shine! Step aside Karen  Mille  a new girl is in town.

Sewing can bring out the creativity in you  and expand your wardrobe without burning a hole in your wallet. owning a look out of the runway can definitely  cost a bomb, so why not have it made yourself or better yet give it you own touch at  a fraction of the cost. these

These days  ,sewing machines aren’t  as boring  as they used to be . Most of the newer models came with built in designs and multiple functions which take sewing to a whole new level . High-tech machines are a plenty, they include USB ports, touchscreen panels and many more .

Sewing has definitely revolutionized  over the years !

No3: a Secondary source of income .

Back to the topic of cost ;given the change in our current economic climate having a second job or side income is somewhat the norm to some . Well if you have decent sewing skills, why not put them to good use ?

Imagine how much you could make by just selling your items or even providing sewing services.  With many readily available online platforms for you to take advantage of  , all you would need is to  focus on your sewing without worrying about operational cost . definitely, something  to consider if it can help ease the financial burden.

Some online platforms include Mudah .my ,Carousell , eBay.

No.4:A form of relaxation”Woosahhhh”

According to The Home Sewing Association in the States,  engaging  in an activity like  sewing reduces the overall heart rate whilst promoting relaxation . It’s no  wonder why  more and more  professionals are taking  up sewing as some sort of diversion from their hectic daily lifestyle.

Independent  sewing  centers ,stitch groups, and DIY outlets have been growing in numbers as more people take up sewing as a hobby. Sewing has also brought  many people  with similar interest  together  to connect and share ideas, a good  excuse to socialize perhaps. Do check out your local community news for more updates on social events  that promote sewing .

Tulip for Mother’s Day!!

Mother’s Day is around the corner and it’s time for you to give your mom something special.

So I’m going to show you how you can sew a colorful and beautiful bouquet of tulips yourself.

You can combine your favorite colors or Mamas and the best part is: it will always remain fresh and an eye-catcher.

Instructions

tulip 2

Materials

  • fabric, stick, glue, cotton, scissors, felt, needle, thread, circle cutter

tulip 3

The Flower

  • Cut circles out of the colorful fabrics with a diameter of 20cm. A circle cutter is a great tool but if you don’t have one just use a bowl similar diameter.
  • Then, fold one of them in half and cut it.
  • And now take the semi-circle and fold into half and sew it with sewing machine or hand at the open edge.(0.5 cm)
  • Turn the fabric into a cone and proceed with other semicircles.

tulip 4

The Stem

  • Cut the green fabric into strips (3 cm wide) and the length slightly shorter than the stick. Repeat it till the numbers of tulips you want.

tulip 5

  • Take the green fabric you cut earlier and turn around and stick double sided tape or use glue to stick it around the stick to create a stem of a tulip.

tulip 6

The Tulip’s Head

  • Take the earlier fabric you sew into a cone and stuff it with cotton.
  • Then, take a needle and thread to sew the open edges.

tulip 7

  • Put the pointed side of the stem into the tulip(you can put some glue to it too) and sew it just like the picture above.

tulip 8

The Leaf

Cut the green felt into a leaf shape and glue it to the stem. Use a peg to peg the leaf and the stem together till the glue dries off.

tulip 9

Let it dry well and you will have a bouquet of tulips ready for Mother’s Day!

Hope these easy projects help you with your MOTHER’S DAY gift idea and hope you enjoy making it!!!

Tote Recycle Bag

Instructions

Step 1:

– Cotton T-shirt (heavy weight fabric & Youth size XL or Adult S or M work best)

~ 3- 5 straight pins

– Pencil or pen

-Scissors

– Sewing machine

Step 2:

Choose an old t-shirt and smooth it flat on a table. Cut and remove the sleeves and make sure you leave the seam in place—this keeps your tote strong!

Step 3:

Position a plate about halfway over the neck opening of the shirt. Trace the plate with your pencil or pen. This will be your cutting line to create the opening for your tote bag. Cut along the traced line.

Step 4:

Turn the T-shirt inside out and pin the bottom of the T-shirt along the hem.

Step 5:

Sew the bottom of T-shirt hem closed. Reinforce your tote bag by sewing over this seam a second time!

Step 6:

Turn the shirt right- side- out. YOU just made your own recycled tote bag!
Fill it with groceries, gym clothes, pool supplies, library books, etc! Keep one handy in your car!

First off decide what scraps you’d like to use, and iron on the medium interfacing to the wrong side of the fabric.

Step 2:

If you’re going to do an applique or buttons, trace around your pattern onto the right side of the fabric so that you know how to place it.

Step 3:

Added a quick appliqued C to this one.

Step 4:

Then  iron on the Peltex to the wrong side of the fabric according to the directions.  Make sure you iron it to the side you want to be the “front” of your key chain.

Step 5:

Cut it out, along with the back of the key chain.

Step 6:

Place wrong sides together, and place two pins about 1″ or so apart on the bottom.

Step 7:

Sew from pin to pin, around the circle, about 1/4″ away from the edge.

Step 8:

Then trim the edges all the way around with pinking shears.

Step 9

Cut a piece of your twill tape or ribbon about 2″ long.

Step 10:

Fold it over your key ring, insert into the opening on the bottom of your key chain, and sew the opening closed, backstitching at the beginning and end.

Map

MAP INSTRUCTION.jpg

Instructions

Step 1:

PULL your scrap fabric out. You can just throw them all over the floor for this one. And don’t weed out fabrics if they are unique. I used a fleece for North Dakota (you can use any map you want), a knit for Kansas and a silk in Illinois. It adds some neat dimension to use different fabrics.

Step 2:

Print off the map, in poster size.

Step 3:

There will be a bunch of sheets like above picture.

Step 4:

Tape it together, overlapping and trimming as needed.  Now find a piece of fabric that you think represents the state in some way.

Step 5 & 6:

Cut out a piece of heat n bond, large enough for the state and iron it to the back of your fabric.

Step 7:

Let it cool and peel off the backing.

Step 8:

Pin the state to your backed fabric.

Step 9:

Cut it out.

Step 10:

Repeat it as the states in the map as been cut it out.

Step 11:

Then iron to a piece of muslin in its spot. I made sure to cut out one state at a time so I didn’t get any mixed up. Keep going until you have all the states on there!

When they are all ironed on, topstitch around each state.Just remember that because this tedious. Backstitch where necessary to keep your stitches sturdy.

Final Step

Stretched it around a piece of plywood and glued the back. Then glue on a piece of lace on the back and you’re ready to hang it!

Hope these scrap fabric projects gives you some ideas for weekends activity with your loved one this earth day!

SERGER TIPS:HOW TO GATHER FABRIC WITH SERGER

Serger owners:

Did you know you can use your serger to gather fabric? Imagine the possibilities ~ no more knotted or broken threads when you gather fabric.

Step 1:

Set your serger for 4-thread serging.

serger1

Step 2:

Increase your Differential Feed to the highest number ~ (this machine the highest is 2)

serger2

Step 3:

Increase your Stitch Length to the highest number ~ (this machine is a 4, but some sergers go up to 5.)

serger3

 Step 4:

Serge along the raw edge.  You will notice that it does a little gathering.  This is normal.

serger4

Step 5:

Notice the two needle threads (the black threads).  Near the fabric edge, put a needle underneath the two parallel threads.  Be sure not to catch either of the looper threads ~ it will knot if you do.  Just the needle threads.

serger5

Step 6:

Pull the two needle threads out of the chain of threads.  Do not let these get tangled.  If you do this correctly, they will slip out easily.

Pull the two needle threads to gather your fabric.

serger6

Step 7:

Voila!  You will have a nice and even gathers that can easily be adjusted and then attached.  No, stray threads that end up on the outside of your project.
